Most of Australia experienced a very prolonged drough of over 10yrs that finally broke in mid 2009 after some of the worst heatwaves, bushfires and dust stroms in decades. This image was shot in February 2008 and a massive dust storm had been whipped up in fierce hot gale force winds that swept through the country's arid heart, northern South Australia and Western NSW. These winds carried the dust all the way over Melbourne and into Bass Strait. I was fortunate enough to be able to capture this rare event as it approached the South Gippsland coastal town of Kilcunda in the late afternoon. The red desert dust and low sun made for some absolutely incredible and rare colours! I vividly remember standing in awe with gale force winds beating at my back as I shot away with my large 6x17 film camera. |
